People have been lulled into a false sense of security over the state of their pensions, an expert has claimed.
Ros Altman, pensions expert, noted that confidence had been lost in the sector and she believes there is not a high enough level of understanding of the main features of a retirement fund.
She stated that the blame for this can be laid squarely at the door of the regulator, as a number of the issues are complicated but people have been unable to get suitable advice.
The Financial Services Authority has operated "asymmetrically" and this has made it too easy to borrow and far too hard to encourage individuals to save, Ms Altman remarked.
According to a recent announcement by the Pensions Policy Institute, in the future many retirees are likely to have greater diversity of income and assets, including housing wealth, available to support them once they stop working.
